A selection of rehabilitation projects carried out over the last three years
Monte Santo Resort in Carvoeiro consists of 140 houses and apartments centered on the clubhouse which contains the resort reception, restaurants, spa and indoor pool. The main swimming pool areas dominates the central areas of the resort, and as the elongated site made it a challenge to make all the units feel a part of the project, we linked all the buildings together by an extensive network of lakes and streams.
The Pestana Grand Hotel at Ponta da Cruz, Funchal is located on a headland giving spectacular sea views eastwards over Funchal, and westwards towards Cabo Girão.
The seagull shaped plan gave the building curving lines of vision which aimed to reduced visual length of the hotel, which has over 300 rooms and aparrtments.
Extensive landscaped areas and one of the biggest swiming pools in Madeira complement and integrate the building into the site.
The project includes five restaurants, generous bar areas and full meeting facilities. The hotel opened in 2005.
Initial designs for the Pestana Porto Santo project began in the mid 1990's but the resort only opened 2008. The hotel accommodation revolves around generous landscaped areas with pools and water features which lead the guest to the famous extensive beach of Port Santo.
The clinic is the second phase of works which we began in about 1995. This building extended the cllinic and was begun in 2002 and opened in 2008.
The project for the Vilamoura Hilton (As Cascatas) was developed on an almost forgotten site, away from the sea where nothing had happened in almost 40 years. We worked alongside John Seifert and his team from start to finish. The development contains over 50,000m2 of construction and was completed just before the economics of the Algarve turned.
Futungo Village was to be a high quality condominium with 64 villas with a central clubhouse and pool area. Each house was to have 3 to 4 bedrooms, private pool and extensive barbecue areas. Unfortunately the development was interrupted during construction.
A scattering of design proposals for projects in Angola and Mozambique which have yet to move ahead or be concluded.
The project contains 145 real estate apartments and we managed to eliminate ground level car circulation which would have destroyed the project. The space the roads should have taken became landscaped areas centered on the pool and other features. The project won the "Best Golf Development - Portugal" from the "European Residential Property Awards" and is managed by Tivoli Hotels and Resorts. WATG were the conceptual architects.
The three hotels here were designed and built between 1989 and 2000, All three presented a number of design challenges. The Pestana Palms overlooked the sea but the the other two had no obvious ocean views, so we compensated this by providing generous pool areas and extensive landscaped areas. Palms opened in 1993, Village in 1995 and Miramar in 2000.. All three have approximately 90 hotel rooms and 90 holiday apartments.
The Exhibition Centre included a camping site and Service Station and was to be a landmark feature to make Porto Santo more than just a summer tourism destination. Locating the service station here would free up the existing beachfront location for other uses which has failed to happen.
